Let’s get it started
Skiing first made its way into this forgotten side valley of the Saalach river in 1898, spreading from the local youth to visitors. By the 1920s, Saalbach had developed into a ski village. After 1945, the first ski lifts were built, and major infrastructure investments soon turned the area into one of Austria’s leading winter sports destinations. The next step was gaining international recognition as an ideal venue to host Alpine Ski World Championships.
Here comes the sun
The "Sunshine World Ski Champs 1991" became a game changer: Two weeks of perfect weather, thrilling competitions, an incredible atmosphere, and mixed emotions – especially for Austria. While there were some sporting mishaps, unforgettable moments stood out: the stunning performances of rookie Stefan Eberharter (both on the slopes and at the legendary after parties), Rudi Nierlich’s fearless racing style, and the bittersweet memories of ski star Petra Kronberger. Meanwhile, young mother Ulli Maier didn’t just win gold; she also won the hearts of the audience.
I have a dream
One man wanted to put the final touch on Saalbach’s rise to international fame: Bartl Gensbichler, President of the Salzburg Ski Association and Chairman of the Saalbach Hinterglemm Schi Club, is currently making his lifelong dream come true – hosting this year's “World Ski Champs at home.” These modern championships focus on sustainability, environmental awareness, regional identity, and a fan zone for a relaxed, communal experience.
Even Mayor Alois Hasenauer can hardly wait for the World Ski Champs 2025 to begin:
"We are excited to welcome international athletes and fans to Saalbach Hinterglemm. Our goal is to provide a warm, authentic, and relaxed atmosphere while ensuring the best possible conditions for an unforgettable event. Together, we will experience the thrill up close."
At the heart of it all, though, are the athletes' performances, inspiring the next generation of skiers – in a region where “authentic” is not just a word but a way of life.
With that in mind: Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome!
