What a day, what a race! The women’s giant slalom at the 2025 Ski World Championships in Saalbach has gone down in history. In a highly dramatic contest, Italy’s Federica Brignone delivered an extraordinary performance to claim victory and become the oldest giant slalom world champion of all time. With the fastest times in both runs, she left the competition in the dust, securing the gold medal with ease. A race that the ski world will not forget anytime soon.
The spring-like conditions at the Zwölferkogel, combined with a long and selective giant slalom course, seemed to play into Brignone’s hands. The 34-year-old appeared completely at ease on the challenging course and once again demonstrated her exceptional skill. In the first run, she set the fastest time with a flawless performance, reinforcing her status as the favorite. But instead of playing it safe in the second run, she delivered another brilliant performance, leaving the competition in awe.
Behind the outstanding Brignone, New Zealand’s Alice Robinson also delivered a remarkable performance. With two strong runs, she secured the silver medal, once again proving she belongs among the world’s elite. Robinson showcased bravery, aggressiveness, and technical mastery – a performance that earned her a well-deserved World Championship medal. The podium was completed by American Paula Moltzan, who took bronze with a time 2.62 seconds behind the winner. With 109 participants, including many exotic competitors, this race was a true spectacle, featuring everything from historic achievements to remarkable performances by unconventional athletes.
Today’s race will be remembered by ski fans for a long time. The dominant Brignone, the impressive Robinson, and the determined Moltzan created a podium that reflected the diversity and quality of alpine skiing. But above all, the name Federica Brignone will forever be linked to this historic race. To become the oldest world champion in history at 34, with a dominant double-fastest-run victory – that is a feat for the ages!
