On this glorious day, under radiant sunshine and perfect slope conditions, we witnessed a thrilling Women's Super-G at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Saalbach 2025. And in the end, all of Austria smiled: 31-year-old Stephanie Venier delivered a stunning performance at her home World Championships, claiming the Super-G world title against all odds.
I was incredibly nervous and felt like I didn’t sleep a single minute. I wished for the number one, and there it was on the video wall.
VENIER SHINES IN GOLD
A vibrating stadium. Pure goosebumps. 14,500 cheering ski fans. In a time of 1:20:47 and a nearly flawless run, Venier mastered the challenging "Ulli Maier" course on the Zwölferkogel and won with a narrow lead of 0.10 seconds ahead of the Italian Federica Brignone. Kajsa Vickhoff Lie was visibly moved at the finish line by her bronze medal win – tied in third place: Lauren Macuga. The American celebrates with a joyful dance after her run.
"We're going for medals today," announced Roswitha Stadlober with confidence, as she radiated excitement upon arriving at the stadium. The president of Ski Austria seems to have a knack for the big moment – and she was right: Venier crowned the medal hunt with a brilliant gold!
A native of Austria now coaching for the USA
The course today in Saalbach was in perfect condition. Thanks to the excellent work of the piste crew, the athletes found a solid, grippy surface, offering ideal conditions for an exciting and fair race. Alex Hoedlmoser, an Austrian originally, who is now coaching for the USA, set a course worthy of a World Championship. The combination of long gliding stretches, waves, and tricky turns demanded not only bravery and risk-taking but also excellent technical skills and strategy from the racers.
The Super-G today was a memorable highlight. Venier’s victory once again proves how local support can be a huge motivator. A well-deserved win, marking the start of more thrilling World Championship events, underlining the team spirit and determination – Austria is rightly glowing today, matching the brilliance of the sun!
