Slope preparations

700 volunteers in action

Perfect slope preparations for Saalbach 2025

The slope preparations for Saalbach 2025 start much earlier before the first athletes hit the track. Especially for an event like the World Championships, the effort is enormous: around 700 volunteers work under the direction of experienced slope managers such as Fritzi Steger and Mani Gensbichler to create a race track in absolute top condition. But what exactly is behind the piste preparation, and why is it so important?

The Perfect SURFACE: A Science in Itself

Months before the competition, the snow machines are put into operation to create a stable foundation. Only artificial snow is used, which is hardened with water through targeted preparation. This process ensures that the snow does not form layers, but is compacted into a continuous, firm "stick." The result: a surface that does not break even under intense strain from numerous racers.

The snow structure is meticulously monitored. Special equipment ensures that the surface is evenly frozen and has the perfect hardness for top speeds. These measures are crucial to ensure that all athletes - from the first to the last runner - can compete under same conditions.

Focus on safety and fairness

Good slope conditions are essential not only for sporting fairness, but also for the safety of the athletes. A poorly groomed course could break, increasing the risk of injury. This is where the experts come in: Fritzi and Mani, the piste managers, are on duty every day to ensure that every turn, transition and roler is perfectly groomed.

In addition to machine grooming with piste crawlers, manual labour also plays a big role. Volunteers improve unevenness by "slipping." If necessary, water is injected into the piste with the help of spraying devices - which are mounted on the piste crawlers - to further harden the snow surface. This immense effort pays off: the athletes have a slope that is not only technically challenging, but also absolutely safe.

A team performance of the highest class

Preparing the slopes for World Champs is a real team effort. From the technical know-how of the snow-machine operators to the commitment of the volunteers, everyone contributes their part to ensure that the track meets the highest international standards. For Fritzi and Mani, this work is a passion. "It's not just about the slope - it's about the sport and putting on a first-class event," the pair emphasize.
